Auld Alliance formed between Scotland and France in 1295; Newton published Principa on motion and gravity in 1687 and in 1989 Seinfeld premiered. In 1994 Amazon was founded and in 1996 Dolly the cloned sheep was born. Today we celebrate the 72nd birthday of the NHS which was founded in 1948. Happy Birthday!
Happy 72nd Birthday to the NHS
In 1934 the Labour Party committed that they would look to establish a state funded public health service. When the Labour Party won in 1945 Aneurin Bevan was appointed as the Health Minister.
He proposed legislation for what would become the NHS in 1946 (for England and Wales) and 1947 (for Scotland). It's aim was to have good healthcare available for all without link to wealth. Upon its formation it had three principles
That it meet the needs of everyone
That it be free at the point of delivery
That it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay
Have fun watching the below videos from the NHS archive.
Public Information Video from 1946 about coughs and sneezes spreading disease (sound familiar?)
Don't spread germs
So on this 72nd anniversary of the NHS we wish a Happy Birthday!
