An anthem that is recognisable the world over - Gerry & the Pacemakers reached the number one spot with 'You'll Never Walk Alone', in 1963.In 1982 the first programme to be aired on Channel 4 was Countdown hosted by Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman. The first section of the M1 is opened, on this day in 1959. Surprisngly, It had no speed limits, no lighting, and even more frightening no crash barriers. No wonder the first fatality came 4 days later.
