    Veganism is defined by Wikipedia as ‘the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet.’ Those people who follow this diet avoid all animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs. A quick Google search can bring up numerous articles, blogs and videos preaching the benefits of ‘going vegan’. 1.2% of the UK population are now vegan and most major supermarket chains have a large range of vegan products for sale. However there have always been concerns raised that it can be difficult to get all the vitamins and minerals that your body requires. This has been highlighted again in a recent study led by Dr Tammy Tong, a nutritional epidemiologist at the Nuffield Department of Population Health. The study contained 55,000 people, of which 2,000 were vegans, and they were followed for eighteen years. There were a total of 3,941 fractures over this period, the study found that vegans had approximately 20 more cases per 1,000 people than meat eaters. The study concluded that the risk of fracturing bones in vegans was 2.3 times higher than in people who ate meat. Fractures of the hip were the most common, but they were also at risk of fracturing or breaking arms, legs, wrists, ribs and collarbone.At TheBoldAge we are not against veganism, far from it, we understand that a vegan diet can be ideal for some people and it is also good for our planet. Studies have also shown that a vegan diet can help people to lose weight and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, some cancers, high blood pressure and type-2 diabetes. However, being vegan does mean that you need to give thought to what you are actually eating to ensure that you get all the nutrients that your body needs, especially calcium, protein, vitamin D and vitamin B12.
